This image was actually supposed to look very, very different then it does here. The original idea was that there would be a group of bugs in the foreground watching the city. In the background, the city would be abuzz with activity with boats, planes and vehicles of all types swarming about. I wanted the city to mirror the activity of the insects in the foreground. The problem is that the original deadline abruptly changed and, on short-notice, I needed to deliver the image a week early. To compund matters, I was traveling the week I needed to deliver and ended up pulling an all-nighter, working on a gerry-rigged machine to finish as much as I could. The image was never really finished though.

The other funny thing is that I did not want an orange butterfly. I wanted something more subdued and less common.

I painted a white-blue pattern for the wings but New Riders changed the color of the butterfly and because of the hasty schedule, they didn’t tell me.

I ended up liking their version better though since the image needed some life. So with all that being said, when I look at this image I mostly see what isn’t there and is supposed to be. The funny thing is that some people write me to tell me how much they love this image. I think the image has a tone of serenity people respond to. I have no plans to redo the imgae but I may go back to the original concept and exeute it a different way.
